A Curated Eyewear Boutique Comes to Bend
A lot of people are going to ask the same first question, so I'll answer it up front.
Yes, the address is the same one Eyes on Wall Street has occupied for over two decades. No, it's not the same store. The Wingers — who built and ran that practice with care — are stepping back from retail. I'm taking over the lease and rebuilding the inside of it as something different.
The name is dropping the Street. Eyes on Wall.
That signals everything you need to know about what we're doing.
What changes
The frame wall is being rebuilt around a small number of independent brands. Akoni, LINDBERG, Anne et Valentin, Entourage of 7. Four houses. That's the wall.
That's a smaller wall than what was here before, on purpose. Curation means leaving things off — and we're leaving a lot of things off. No mass-market lines, no logo-heavy fashion houses, no stack of inventory designed to fill a shelf rather than fit a face. The wall will breathe.
The room is being rebuilt around the frames. Less retail floor. More fitting space. Better light. Some materials work — wood, stone, cream walls — to match the brands rather than fight them. You'll see when you walk in.
The way we sell is changing too — slower, by appointment when possible, with no goal beyond finding a frame that's right. We wrote a longer note on that, here.
What stays
The location, more or less. Wall Street stays Wall Street; the new wordmark on the door pays a quiet respect to the corner. We didn't pick this corner randomly. Bend has been my home for years; my other company, Bellinger House USA, has been operating out of an office on SE 3rd this whole time. The boutique is the front door I never had in town.
Most of the eye-care services the old store offered are not part of this rebuild. We're a boutique, not a clinic. Eye exams and medical-side work are best handled by the optometrists in town who do that as their craft. We'll be happy to refer.
Who I am, briefly
My name is Jakob Talbo. Danish. I've spent the last seventeen years designing eyewear, mostly out of an LA studio I started in 2007 with six other opticians called Entourage of 7. My designs have ended up on a few faces I'm proud of and a lot of faces I'll never know. In 2013 we joined Bellinger House, the Danish company my long-time friends Claus and Malene Bellinger Diederichsen founded. I'm still head of design there.
That's the long way of saying I've spent my career on one side of the wall.
Eyes On Wall is me trying the other side. Watching people pick up a frame in person — what they say, what they don't say, what they put back down — is a kind of teaching I haven't had access to from the design side. Bend is small enough that the boutique can be slow. That's exactly what I want.
When we open
Soft open: later this year. We'll announce the date here on The Journal and on our store door, in that order.
